Because pianos are made up of thousands of moving parts, over time some of these parts can become worn, broken, or damaged. Common repairs for pianos are sticking keys, broken strings, broken hammers, cracked key ivories, dampers ringing, pedals squeaking, loose or missing action parts, and many many more.

Many of these repairs (eg. dampers & pedals) are small and can be fixed quickly; while others (eg. broken bass strings or missing hammers) have replacement parts that need to be ordered. Most issues mentioned by are customers are easily fixable, but we discuss all issues with our customers before starting the work.

What are dampers?

Dampers are a very important part of the action that stops the strings from sounding when the key is released. They are made from felt that fits between the strings to dampen the vibrations of the string.

Why do bass strings need to be ordered?

Bass strings are different to regular strings. They are longer and are wound with copper to give a greater diameter so they resonate at the same volume as the other strings in the piano. Each manufacturer of pianos has different length and thickness of these strings, so they need to be sent to a string maker to be custom made. This normally takes 1-2 weeks.
